Think of the Children

Think of the children.
Think of the coddled simpletons.
Think of when
You were young.
Did the real world
Scare you to death,
Or was it the bogeyman
Underneath your bed?
Was it the dark unknown
Or cold, hard knowledge
That gave you a fright?
Is it really beneficial
To shelter the youth
From the truth?

When the day comes
To thrust them outside
Alone to make their own way,
Don’t you think their naïveté
Will put them at a disadvantage?
How well could they make a decision
Based on false inclinations?
How will they face the worst
If they’ve only been told the best?
